Dog-filled Week

Made a trip down to Pets Villa with Jas and Carol last Wednesday. I'm not usually scared of dogs but when literally hundreds of them came rushing at me, I freaked out. I got trampled on by one oversized dog about to attack another growling-teeth-barring-about-to-kill-dog. Ended up with a bruise on my ankle. After the dogs got a little less excited, I got to mingle with a few and fell in love with them.
This one's Caesar, my favorite. He followed me around and when I didn't notice him, he gave me his paw, like, "hey, don't forget I'm here ok!" and when other dogs started fighting, he came and stood in front of me, to make sure I didn't get hurt. Mad love for him. Wish I could take him home.
Dew is a crazy loving dog despite his very fierce appearance. He seriously looks like he could take my arm out with one bite but he's as gentle as a rabbit. He was lying on the table and when we went to stroke him, he rolled over, his body half dangling in midair.
Lucky. A husky and whippet mix. Carol wanted this one. She got scalded with hot water by banglahs. Fuckers. Despite her horrible experience with humans, she's super friendly. She has a brother who got adopted the day we went. Those two looked so happy together though. Wherever her brother went, she followed. Can't imagine her being all alone without him :(

This one's an ex guard dog. The owner abandoned it when it got older. Seriously.. people are such assholes sometimes. The dog laid down its life for you and when it has no more use to you, you throw it away?! WTH.
Tony, the dog Jason sponsored. He's an overweight little thing! He can barely walk! He likes going to other dogs' bowls and stealing their food! :) It was a tough choice deciding between sponsoring Tony or Caesar but Tony won cause that day we went, he peed blood so Jason thought he'd need extra medical assistance if he had tick fever.

I wish I could take them all home! Sigh.

I really liked Pets Villa. They really take care of the dogs, and try to save as many as they can. (There is a dog there with only 3 legs and another with just 1 eye, the other stitched up) What I like most is that they have a no-kill policy, which I strongly believe in. I don't believe what the SPCA does sometimes is what's best for the dog. Euthanasia seems like it's been made too available to them. When I went to the SPCA and fell in love with 2 badly mistreated terriers (one was blind and the other had a skin condition so bad, it's skin was bleeding) and requested to sponsor the treatment for the dogs, they rejected, claiming it'd be "unfair to other dogs with worse conditions" and suggested I made a donation which would be shared equally amongst all the dogs. No thank you, no way I'm funding euthanasia.

More angry rants to come but to hear them, you need to know this other story.

So Jas and I were driving home along McRitchie flyover when I spotted a dog in the side-view mirror. I yelled for Jas to pull over and jumped out of the car and started running towards it. Jas followed. The dog saw Jas charging towards it so it decided to run for it TOWARDS traffic. OMG, I swear I was so scared I was close to tears. My heart was beating out of my chest. A car was heading straight for it as it ran unbothered by the car's presence. Thankfully the driver swerved in time and missed the dog. Finally the dog settled down under the barricades of two express ways. Jas ran out to sit by it and called the SPCA. When they came, which was more than 30mins later, they did more harm than good. They brought a huge net, obviously too big to fit through the barricades. They tried to stuff it in anyway which alarmed the dog and sent it running out onto the flyover again. Jason, the crazy boy he is, dashed out after the dog. My heart stopped for like a good minute. I have never been so scared in my life. Thank goodness he's such a fast runner. He managed to outrun the dog and grabbed it just before a car came.

So anyway, fast forward. Carol decided to take the dog in until we found an owner. She made an appointment with the SPCA to see the vet 3 days later. So when that day came, she asked the vet what would happen if she were to leave it at the SPCA and put it up for adoption and his reply was that they'd humanely euthanize her!
WTH!
And their reasons are cause she's 4-5years old and has skin problems.
EVEN MORE WTH RIGHT?!
So only puppies in a pink of health get saved, great.
So if you were 50 and had allergies, I can choose to put you down as well?!
I don't really know how the organization is run, but if a middle-aged dog with minor skin issues doesn't stand a chance, then I fear for those dogs who get seriously abused.

When will humans realize that killing is not the answer to everything?

  3. Euthanizing the dogs is a cost effective measure. Where do you suppose the never ending supply to upkeep an ever growing population of discarded or abandoned dogs going to come from. Unless one day, a Billionaire decides to put his entire wealth into doing up home for dogs if not, even a millionaire wouldn't be able to maintain every single dog that gets abandoned.
